The Lost Buddhas
(Sydney)
29 Aug - 23 Nov 2008
The Lost Buddhas are 6th-century Chinese sculptures, which were unearthed in a sports field in Qingzhou in 1996. Thirty-five of the miraculously-preserved limestone figures are on display at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney.
Around 400 of the Buddha sculptures were discovered by builders who were levelling a sports field in Qingzhou, a town in the Chinese province of Shandong. The field was the former site of the Longxing (Dragon Rise) Temple, where, for unknown reasons, the Buddha statues were parcelled up and protected before they were buried there during the 12th century.
Amazingly, The Lost Buddhas have kept their painted colours and even the gilded details have been preserved. Evidently the work of a skilled sculptor, the Buddhas are remarkable pieces of art, not to mention huge - one in particular weighs over a tonne.
To accompany the exhibition, the Art Gallery of New South Wales also hosts a programme of lectures from scholars around the world.
